For this blog post, I thought I’d tell readers about my favorite time of year in Thailand. There are lots of great festivals and events in Thailand, but the one that always brings a smile to my face is Songkran, but not for the reasons you might think.

Songkran is Thailand’s New Year celebration. It happens every year on May 13 to 15. Most people love the water fights and the street parties, but the reason why Songkran is my favorite time of the year in Thailand is because it brings everyone together.

Young and old, male and female, Asian and Western -- everyone forgets about their differences and comes together to celebrate the New Year. It’s amazing to drive around the streets and see so many happy faces. Sure, people in Thailand are happy a lot of the time anyway, but during Songkran, it all seems so much warmer and more real.

I’ve seen Songkran in Bangkok, Phuket, Koh Chang and Koh Samui. Songkran is definitely best experienced on an island. In Phuket this year, I had the chance to hop on the back of a friend’s pickup truck and ride around the island all day shooting people with a water gun. We had a blast and it was so much more fun to be mobile than stationary.

It was great to do a tour of the island and see such a variety of people and places. What really struck me was that there were gang kids, old people, tourists and expats all enjoying the festival together as one.

The water fighting is great, too, but it’s the whole atmosphere that envelopes Thailand that really excites me. If you’ve never seen Songkran in Thailand, you really must, because it’s like nothing else you will have seen before.

My only advice for Songkran is to arrive at your destination a couple of days before the festival begins and carry your money and phone in a plastic bag at all times. Oh, and wear clothes that you don’t mind ruining.

You should try Songkran in Chiang Mai. I've only seen Songkran in BKK and Chiang Mai, but Chiang Mai is crazy that time of year. But crazy in a good way. :)
